During the extraordinary session of the 15th National Assembly, chaired by National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue on January 18th, the Permanent Vice Chairman of the National Assembly, Tran Thanh Man, presented the proposal submitted by the National Assembly Standing Committee regarding the dismissal of the President for the term 2021-2026 and the termination of the role as a member of the 15th National Assembly for Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
Nguyen Xuan Phuc, born in 1954, is a key leader within the Party and the State. He comes from a revolutionary family with a rich tradition. He received basic training and developed his leadership skills through various appointments and approvals from the Central Committee of the Party, the Politburo, and the National Assembly, holding important leadership positions within the Party and the State.
During his tenure as Prime Minister from 2016 to 2021, he made significant efforts in leading and directing the COVID-19 pandemic response, which yielded important results. However, he took political responsibility for the serious violations, misconduct, and consequences caused by a number of officials, including two Deputy Prime Ministers, three Ministers, and several officials who faced criminal charges.
Fully aware of his responsibility to the Party and the people, Nguyen Xuan Phuc submitted a letter to the National Assembly, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, requesting to resign from the position of President, Chairman of the Council for National Defense and Security, and to step down as a member of the 15th National Assembly, retiring from public service.
After listening to Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s statement, the National Assembly held internal discussions regarding the proposal submitted by the National Assembly Standing Committee.
The National Assembly conducted a secret vote and passed a resolution on the dismissal of the President for the term 2021-2026 and the termination of the role as a member of the 15th National Assembly for Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
The 3rd extraordinary session of the 15th National Assembly then came to a close this afternoon.

On the afternoon of January 17th, the 13th Party Central Committee held a meeting to consider and give opinions on the request for resignation, retirement, and retirement from public service by Nguyen Xuan Phuc – a member of the Politburo, a member of the 13th Party Central Committee, the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and the Chairman of the Council for National Defense and Security for the term 2021-2026.
Based on the current regulations of the Party and the State and considering Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s request, the Party Central Committee agreed to allow Nguyen Xuan Phuc to resign from the positions of member of the Politburo, member of the 13th Party Central Committee, the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and the Chairman of the Council for National Defense and Security for the term 2021-2026.
